Our great friends at Esporão have been recognised as one of the 50 greatest wine brands in the world, by Drinks International magazine, ranking in 13th position in ‘The World’s Most Admired Wine Brands’ 2020. These awards have been attributed since 2011 and distinguish the most prominent and prestigious wine brands on the planet.
To grant these awards, 'Drinks International' gathered its academy of experts comprised of wine industry professionals, from traders, retailers, importers, bartenders, cellar and bar owners, to masters of wine, wine critics, journalists and oenology professors. Subsequently, using the services of Wine Intelligence (a company that specialises in market studies, statistics and consulting), more than 160.000 wine consumers were interviewed all over the world. The evaluation criteria include consistent or improving quality, quality-price ratio, the wines’ “sense of place”, country of origin and type of grape varieties produced.
The Herdade do Esporão estate was established in 1267 and the property has been owned by the Roquette family since 1973. Their first wine was bottled in 1985. The winery are keen to preserve tradition whilst seeking to combine this with innovation. Production is overseen by the well respected and highly experienced winemaker David Baverstock. His philosophy is to create authentic and exciting wines, taking full advantage of Portuguese heritage.
